DISCOVER is a career discovery framework with eight steps, one for each letter of the word. The first four are about you — what interests you, what you tend to be good at, how you like to learn, and what actually matters to you. The last four are about the world — careers worth looking at, skills you will need, courses that fit, and what to do next.
The order is not decorative. Each step uses what the one before it found, which is why the suggestions at the end are built from things you said at the beginning rather than picked off a shelf.
This article explains what each step means and, just as importantly, what the process cannot tell you.

The first half: understanding yourself
D — Discover your interests
Interests are not the same as things you are good at, and not the same as things you enjoy relaxing with. In career terms, an interest is a kind of activity you are drawn towards repeatedly, often without noticing.
A useful test: think of the last three times you lost track of time. What were you doing? Fixing something? Arguing a point? Organising a mess into order? Making something look right? Explaining something to someone until they got it?
Those are interests. They tend to be more stable than the job titles we attach to them, which is why they are a better starting point than "what do you want to be".
I — Identify your strengths
A strength is something you do well relative to most people, which is not the same as something you score well in. Plenty of people get good marks in subjects they find a grind, and plenty of real strengths never appear on a report card — noticing what other people miss, staying calm when something goes wrong, explaining a complicated thing simply.
This step looks for the second kind. It is deliberately not a test of ability, and no marks are involved.
S — Study preferences
Two students can be equally capable and completely different in how they learn. One needs to build the thing before the theory makes sense. Another needs the theory first or the building feels arbitrary. One thinks best out loud with other people; another needs an hour alone before they have an opinion worth hearing.
This matters more than it sounds, because courses differ enormously in how they teach. A programme that is mostly lab work and a programme that is mostly reading can lead to similar careers and feel like completely different lives for three years.
C — Clarify your motivations
What do you want work to give you? Security. Independence. Recognition. Time. The sense of having built something. Being near your family. Being far from it.
None of these are better than the others, and most people want several at once. The point of naming them is that they explain a lot of the disagreements people have with themselves — and with their parents — about which path to take.
The second half: what comes back
O — Open career pathways
Here the framework turns outward. Based on what the first four steps surfaced, it puts forward career directions worth looking into — including some you may not have considered, which is usually the more useful half.
The word "explore" is doing real work. These are directions to investigate, not verdicts.
V — Visualise future skills
A career direction is not much use without a sense of what it would actually demand. This step sets out the skills a path tends to require, which ones you appear to have some foundation in, and which you would need to build.
E — Explore programs
This is where it becomes concrete. Courses at your institution are matched to what you have said, and — this is the part most tools skip — the reasoning is shown.
There is a specific reason that matters. Many universities offer six or more courses that are near-neighbours of each other. Computer Science, Computer Science with AI and Machine Learning, with Cloud Computing, with Cyber Security, with Data Science, plus a BCA with its own set of specialisations. A tool that simply announces "you match B Tech CSE with Data Science" has told you almost nothing, because you have no way to judge why not one of the other five.
So the matching works at two levels. First the field — computing, say, and why. Then the specialisations within it, and how they differ from each other.
Illustrative example — Meera, Class 12
Meera answered questions about what held her attention (explaining things until people understood them, organising messy information) and how she learns (needs to see the whole picture before the details make sense). DISCOVER's Open step surfaced three directions worth exploring, one of which was data-adjacent fields she hadn't previously considered. The Explore step then showed her institution's six computing-family courses side by side — not just "you match Data Science" but why Data Science over Cyber Security or straight Computer Science, based specifically on what she'd said about preferring to organise information over defending a system.
R — Recommend next steps
The last step turns all of it into something you can act on: what to look into, who to talk to, what to try before committing three years. A plan rather than a verdict.
Where the ideas come from
The framework draws on established career development thinking, including career interest frameworks such as RIASEC — the widely used way of describing the kinds of work people are drawn to, which underpins O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupational database — combined with AI personalisation to write something specific to you rather than assembled from a template.
Worth saying plainly: these frameworks are useful vocabulary, not laws of nature. Research has tested RIASEC's underlying structure — the idea that six interest types sit at fixed distances from each other — outside the Western samples it was built on, with mixed results. A study comparing American and Chinese Singaporean students found the structure broadly held up, but with weaker fit than earlier US research, and with some categories carrying culture-specific meanings. We use frameworks like this for what they're good at — giving people language for things they already half-knew about themselves — not as a claim about what anyone will become.
On what interest fit actually predicts: a 2024 meta-analysis of 23 studies on interest–programme congruence found it is a small positive predictor of academic achievement, persistence, and satisfaction with the programme. Real, worth having, and a long way from destiny.
What to do next
- Try answering D, I, S and C on paper first. Ten minutes, no tool required. What holds your attention, what comes easily, how you learn, what you want from work.
- Ask someone who knows you what they would put for your strengths. It is often not what you would put.
- Pick one career direction you are curious about and find someone doing it. An hour of asking a real person what their Tuesday looks like is worth more than any report.
